Tier 2 over 18 dependent/Urgent Help

My father has worked in the UK under the Tier 2 category. My family and I were granted leave to remain till 14/11/2012. So far, we have lived in the UK about 40 months, but my father's job ended in June 2011. We have received a letter from home office, they limited our permission to stay to 17/10/2011 and indicated that we are not required to leave the UK as a result of this decision. Each member of family received a separated letter. Due to this, I want to switch my visa to student visa, but I need to know if I should leave the UK for this purpose.

Yes, you can't apply for this category inside the UK.

But in the letter I've received from the home office it is written that : you are not required to leave the united kingdom as a result of this decision.

that just means that you do not need to leave the UK immediately - your visa has instead been curtailed to 17/10/2011 but which date you will need to leave the UK unless you can switch into another category.

Has lucapooka has said however, you can't switch from ther PBS dependent category to tier 4 as you do not have leave in any of the catergories listed in 245ZX b). You need to apply from outside the UK. See 245ZX. Requirements for leave to remain

That was referring to the fact that you can remain in the UK until your current leave expires (the curtailment date). After which time you must leave the UK or make a transition into another immigration category. It does not mean you can apply for an immigration category from inside the UK that ordinarily does not permit applications inside the UK from applicants who have your particular immigration status. Sorry!
