British Passport for UK Newborn Baby?

Hi All,

I am set to become the proud father of a baby girl in October and wanted to know if she can get a UK passport? (we want to travel to Colombia in December/January).

I am a dual national, I have Australian/Italian passports and have lived in the UK since October 2005 (so over 5 years). My fiancÃ©e is Colombian and also been in the UK for over 5 years. She also has a residence stamp for 5 years by virtue of me exercising my EU treaty rights.

Can anyone please explain what I need to do for my baby girl to get a UK passport/citizenship?

Have you been exercising your treaty rights for 5 years, e.g. as a worker, self-employed person, self-sufficient person, student etc? If so then as long as you can provide evidence of this and therefore that you have acquired PR then yes you can apply for a British Passport your your child after her birth. You may find it easier if you apply for confirmation that you have acquired Permanent Residence now so that you have this before or shortly after your child is born.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have lived/worked in the UK since January 2006 by virtue of me being an EU citizen (with my Italian passport) but have never applied for/or received a piece of paper saying I am a Permanent Resident.
How do I apply for confirmation of Permanent Residence then?

If this will speed up the process for my daughter to get her passport then I would do it ASAP! Thanks again! John

You apply on form Eea3.

Thanks! Just printed it and will apply for this certificate.

To confirm, once I have this document, I assume it's straight forward to apply for the passport later?

You must show that you had aquired PR prior to baby's birth in the UK. As the EEA3 application is after the baby's birth, this may not be clear.

Perhaps better for baby to apply for confirmation of British nationality status.

I would avice you not to apply for PR confirmation(this can take up to 6 months), if you want travel shortly the best option is send all the documents needed to support eea3 along with your child passport app.
Two of my friend done it and only issue was if they been claiming any benefits during 5 years.
Also they sended covering letter along with passport app explaining why they think they Have PR and why they think child was born as British Citizen.
IPS issued a passport in about 2-3 weeks in both cases.
So I'm sure they know the school now, maybe quicker this time.

Thats good idea, but you can do it at any time after your holiday, it will make easy any future passport AppS.

Thank you all for the advice and information.

boloney, you make some good points. I did notice the "up to 6 months" time frame on the app. I think I will take your advice on board and add my daughters details to this app and get the passport then.

I also called up the passport office today and they said I simple need to provide evidence that I have lived/worked in the UK for last 5 years and send the standard passport app for my daughter. They said it would take 6 weeks to process.

So seems straight forward process.

It is straigh forward, if you want I can give you covering letter which my friends used. But in advance, language I used to write it is broken English
