Family visitor visa for my in-laws

Hello everyone,
Had few questions about family visitor visa that my in-laws will be applying from mumbai next week.
I'm hoping they will get a 6 month multiple entry visa which will allow them to enter into UK and stay for 6 months.
My questions is say if after staying in UK for 5 months they go on an 14 days Europe tour and enter UK again will they get another permission to stay for 6 more months? Or will they have to leave UK by 6 months from the date of first entry. They will be applying for schenzhen visa from mumbai itself.

Assuming they are from a country where visitors are required to apply for visit visas before they travel to the UK: If they are issued a six month visit visa it will be valid from the date of issue. If they spend five months in the UK, leave for 14 days, then return, they will only be allowed entry until the completion of the visa. They will not get another six months.

Thank you for the reply, but my query is about the 6 months allowed to stay after entering UK. Is this 6 months permission to stay at every entry into UK on multiple entry visa. Say if they get a 6 month multiple entry visa from 1st November, that means that they can enter in UK from 1st November until 31st April. If they enter UK on 1st November and go on an Europe holiday on 1st April, come back into UK on 15th April, will they be allowed to remain in UK until 14th October or only until 31st April?

Actually there are 3 things to the visa...
Valid from date (say 01/11/2011)
Valid until date (say 01/05/2011)
Duration of stay (180 Days)


The holder can stay in the country max until the Valid until date not beyond that no matter how many days left in the Duration of Stay is.

Valid until date (say 01/05/2011)
Duration of stay (180 Days)


The holder can stay in the country max until the Valid until date not beyond that no matter how many days left in the Duration of Stay is.

I was under the impression that you can enter into UK anytime between Valid from and Valid until date and then you can stay for 6 months from the date of entry irrespective of valid until date.
Is that correct, please help.

No. Some other countries operate on this basis but not the UK. It's a fixed window from the date the visa is issued.

Many years ago that used to be case, 1990s, but now you can only stay between the dates shown on the visa
