Is my marriage legal?

Post by tinalouiseh » Mon Sep 26, 2011 2:38 pm

I am a UK citizen and my partner was deported to Nigeria after being in prison. I married him in Nigeria on 28th September 2009. When we went to the reigistry office the registra wanted to see my birth certificate, letter from British embassy to say i had not been previously married and my passport. I had none of these with me, we went through the ceramony and completed all documents but they would not give us the certificate until i had shown the documents. I left Nigeria without the certificate. My partner and I have now parted a year ago and I do not know where I now stand. I have no clue which registry office we were in and my partner and I are no longer on speaking terms. I dont know how to get divorced or if I need to ! thanks Tina

It is difficult to say.

Why don't you try to phone Nigerian (Wedding registry) state authority and try to give them your details. They might be able to help you by checking though their database.

If you have no clue about your situation then it's certain that no-one here would either. You need to find out if your marriage is considered as being legal and legitimate under Nigerian law. We can't tell you this as we don't have the necessary information. If it is indeed a legal marriage, then it will be recognised as being legal and legitimate under UK law.
