Extending Visitor Visa for US

Post by ryvnn » Wed Sep 13, 2006 8:42 pm

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I am going to ask anyway since I can't find the exact information online.

I am here on a 6 month visitor visa from the United States in the United Kingdom. I am currently living with my boyfriend (who is a UK Citizen) to see if we could live together for 4 months before going ahead and applying for a finacee visa. We met in April where I came for a holiday visit for two weeks and this is the second time this year we have seen each other.

However, I wanted to know if there was a way I could apply for an extension and apply for a work permit so I can have a part time job and earn some income to pay off my bills. As I understand, you have to have someone apply for you, but the only expertise I have is in sales and I will have a Bachelors in American Law in September of next year, so I do not know what kind of jobs I could be looking for if I did this.

In addition, I have one other question that many people have asked me--since I am going to a university online, could that count toward getting a student visa if I show them what classes I have taken and are taking?

You can't extend a visitor's visa that was initially issued for six months. If you had been issued a visitor's visa for less than six months, you could apply for an extension to bring it up to six months. After those 180 little days are up though, it's time to go home.

Look into the BUNAC programme, which will allow you (and other recent US university graduates) to spend a few more months in the UK and work at the same time. Others may pipe in about the specifics, but there's nothing stopping you from googling it yourself. By all means, though, do not work on your visitors visa. That's illegal. You want to remain in Mother Home Office's good graces should you ever intend to stay here on a much longer basis.
