Working as a foreign student and NINo

Post by afriley » Thu Oct 13, 2011 10:51 pm

I am in the UK as a Tier 4 Student; I can work for 20 hours a week during term time. I don't have a National Insurance Number as of yet. My university offered me a very small administrative job; 3 days this month (about 12 hours in total) and about 18-20 hours in December in total (2-3 days as well).

I've called to book an appointment to get a National Insurance Number today (as I just found about the job offer a couple of days ago), and the earliest date I got was 4th November - obviously, way after my first few days of work. Is that okay (I believe you don't need the NINo for work up to 28 days?), and do I need to get the number/go to the interview after all, considering I will be working for so little? I've heard about some kind of temporary NINo employers could give. Could someone clarify this for me?

You can work without NI number for some time, It all comes to your Tax code. If you don't have a NI Number you will be paying more tax (Emergency tax) on a BR code. As soon as you get your NI make sure to change your tax code. If you paid more tax on BR you can claim them back at the end of tax year when you get your P60. But usually this is automatic. HMRC will have a record.
In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on :)
