Applying for retention of South African citizenship

Post by esterhuizeng » Tue Oct 25, 2011 9:46 am

Hi,

I am in the process of applying for my British citizenship and have now received the letter stating that I haven't yet applied for this. Now I need to apply for my retention of South African citizenship before doing my British application...

What I want to know is whether I need an appointment at the South African consulate to apply for retention of citizenship or do I just go to the consulate and hope for the best? I have been trying for the last week to speak to somebody on the number provided on the website but can't get through to anybody.

Sorry for the silly question but I would appreciate it if somebody could clarify for me.

Thanks

you don't need an appointment at the SA consulate in London. They are open every weekday from 9.00 - 12:45 I went a couple of weeks ago and it was very easy. There was a short queue and they asked me if I wanted to wait for the confirmation letter, which I did. It all took less than an hour. You can download the forms from their website and you can pay the 25 pound fee in cash. All you need to do is take your passport / id and letter from the home office (make copies of each before you go)

Thanks for the info. Not every day something at the SA consulate is easy!

As per AlgieUK, had mine done last year July, only took 2hrs, no appointment, just have your docs, pics, cash and bits and it's an easy process.

Thanks Tsotsi good to know.

Can I also ask how you applied for the citizenship and what you found the easiest process? Did you do it direct or through an agency?

I did mine through the nationality checking service (NCS). They charge a fee, forty pounds in my case, for which they check your application, photocopy and certify all your supporting documents. You get to keep all of your original documents which is good.

Did it all via attorneys, and today I found out my BC has been approved.

cost a penny via the attorneys but you can't beat peace of mind, so it was all well worth it.

fiance > spouse > PR/IRL > BC all done via attorneys local and SA
