If you are doing it as an experiment and have lots of time and even more patience, then you might try doing it.

If you are wanting to go on a relaxing vacation somewhere then it would not make much sense.

You say "we". Whose passport is expired? EU or non EU?

If you apply for PR in Dec 2012, then you may be able to apply for British citizenship in Dec 2013. That may then take 3-6 months for approval. And then you would need to get a passport. So you would have the British passport in summer 2014, if all goes well and your dates are correct.

So you would want to travel for approximately two years on an expired passport?

Note that you MIGHT be able to travel within the EU if your spouse is traveling with you. It will NOT work if you try to travel outside the EU or try to get a visa to anywhere.

True from the immigrations rules. However, unless using a private jet (in which case, you could probably also spare £40 for a passport), you would not be able to board a flight/train/ferry. Having a valid travel document is normally part of T&C's you agree to when purchasing a ticket.
