IELTS Question, Help please

Post by tolu » Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:59 am

Hi,

I have a diploma from foundation and I have been accepted to another University for first year.

I have been advised to do the ielts exam in other for my visa application to be valid. Is that true?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Sorry for the delayed response.
Nationality: Nigerian

From what I can understand from the link you sent me, I need to do the IELTS test in order to extend my visa unless I am doing a foundation or HND course?

As you are studying at degree level, your university has discretion to confirm they are satisfied that you english is at level B2 or above using their own means of assessment without requiring you to take a secure English language test (SELT), however unfortunately Nigeria is not on the list of majority English language speaking countries and therefore if your unviersity is not prepared to exercise its discretion then they can require to take an English language test (including IELTS) in order to be satisfied that you meet the B2 standard, and that you meet the entry requirements for the course.

I am not sure what you are talking about re. HND or foundation - if you were studying below degree level, then you would have to take a SELT

Thanks. I thought so. On my offer letter, I wasnt asked to take a SELT.

The link you sent me, had a list of exemptions for the SELT i.e

>your course is at or above level 6 of the revised National Qualifications Framework (equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree); or

>your course is a foundation degree, or an HND in Scotland; or

>your course is a pre-sessional course that you will take before taking a degree course in the UK; or

>you are a government-sponsored student who wants to study an English language course; or

So if it was a foundation course or any other low level course, I dont need to take the SELT?[/list]

you neglected to copy and paste the first part of that passage:

If your confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) was assigned to you before 21 April 2011, your education provider must ensure that you are competent in English at a minimum of level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) unless

So if the CAS was assigned after, this means the test is compulsory?

ask your sister to post herself, and don't post pretending that the query is about you. I have already answered (your sisters) query. The information is available on the UKBA website on the link I have posted and in the policy guidance which she needs to read and understand to make her application.

the university's international student advisor will be able to advise her, perhaps a better idea than you misreading information
