My niece has ILR and her husband has just been granted a 3 year visa....he has worked in the past with a NI number which he obtained without going through the correct channel. He now needs to apply for a proper NI number. Can you forsee any problem?

has he worked with the wrong NI? he need to book an appoint at the job centre and apply for NI, taking his passport /visa and some other documents they will ask him to bring when he rings to make an appoint.

was in the same situation and I wrote to the tax office asking to have all my NI contributions transfered into my New NI.

good luck

You don't necessarily need to visit the jobcentre.

I phoned them and asked for the forms, send in completed forms with copies of:

a) passport incl. visa
b) proof of address, e.g., council tax bill

Received a NI number in the post a couple of weeks later.

Bosh.
