Just a quick thank you to people like John whose posts I have been reading for last 2 years, helped me enormously with understanding immigration law.
Anyways, I had a Set M application for Indefinite Leave to Remain for my wife at Sheffield last week. I applied 28 days before her 2 year entry in UK. I am a British Citizen by birth.
Sheffield PEO is quite difficult to find by car as Sat Nav sent me on one way streets etc. so I parked about 500 metres away and walked to office, just got there in time. Actual building is cramped and has basic facilities eg toilets, baby changing, vending machine. Please note you have to switch off your mobile!
Anyway, we went past thew airport type security and had to report to reception. Got a ticket number, waited about 10 mins and then they called us, spoke to my wife rather than me and asked her about documents etc, did a quick check, took all our documents and bundled it in a file and told her to pay. I went to payment counter, had problems as I was paying by Natwest (authorised over 1000 pounds) ended up using two debit cards.
We sat down, waited whilst a case worker looked at our file. This part is very nerve wracking but I was confident our application would be successful. Couple of things worried me, I changed my name by deed poll six years ago, (had this proof with me), also we claimed tax credits jointly (as per John's advice) and also my wife only took ESOL course level 1 as her english was not good enough for Life in the UK test.
After about 40 minutes, case worker called us had a couple of questions. Asked us about where wife studied college (our hometown), and asked if we had any more documents in her name. I had a second file with extra documents and gave her 3-4 documents. Caseworker said they should have final answer in 20 mins or so. Also thanked us for photocopying all documents which saves them time and effort! Waited nervously again, our baby was getting agitated, we did not go outside.
Around 20 minutes later, caseworker called us, said everything was fine, ILR granted, wifes passport would be stamped in 10 mins or so. We were overjoyed at this moment, I think everyone in office knew we were approved! Later, we were called to reception with ILR vignette in wifes passport, checked all details were correct and exited around 12.15 pm, got there 10.00 am so fairly quick turnaround.

1 savings statement for myself (cohabitation)
Letter from mother saying we live at home, dont pay rent
Title deeds proving mother owns home
10 photos spread over 2 years showing wife and I together
Mobile Phone bills last 2 months
Cohabitation documents were spread out over 2 years. The extra documents I gave to CW were because they like to have 6 separate sources (not what it says on Set M!):
Letter from hospital
Birth certificate for our child
National Insurance letter
