old passport used for vacation travel to UK (no visa) lost

Sorry to bring up the lost passport question again, but I thought my case was a little different. I lost an old expired passport that I used for two week travel to UK. I don't need a visa for vacation travel, so there was no visa in it, but i did use it to go in and out of the UK. The passport expired normally. However, when I tried to look for it for PSW application, I found it missing. Can I just record the status of the passport as 'Lost' without a police report? Thanks in advance.
