IS SHE BRITISH?

Post by Thandia » Sun Oct 15, 2006 12:02 pm

I would appreciate some help from the forum gurus or nyone who's able to offer advice on this confusing issue. A friend of mine was born here(in England) in 1977 of a Brit father & a Zimbabwean mother. At the time of her birth, her parents were not married. They obtained a Zimbabwean birth certificate for her in 1982 (I guess from their embassy). Her parents later married in Zimbabwe in 1985. My friend's mom died when she was 10 & her father passed away a few months ago. We decided to take her away on a holiday to St. Lucia & have recently discovered she has no passport! She has always assumed she was Brit. Is this the case? If so, how is she able to apply for a Brit passport on a foreign birth certificate? The birth certificate states her place of birth as the UK & her father is named on her birth certificate. She also has her father's birth certificate & marriage licence to her mom. Is she stateless, Zim (never held a passport) or Brit (also never held a passport)? :?: :? :?

Very curious! There's absolutely no doubt that a child born in the UK before 1983 is now a British citizen - the only thing that would have ruled it out would have been a father who was a foreign diplomat, accredited in London.

Are you sure that the Zimbabwean High Commission birth certificate is the only one she has? Birth registration has been compulsory in UK for at least the last 150 years or so...

Perhaps a trip to the Family Records Centre in the City might be in order - or the General Register Office.
