Senior / Specialist Level Work Experience

Senior / Specialist Level Work Experience

Dear All

Can any of you kindly clarify me the following point. I have a PhD and have been working as a Senior Lecturer in a University. I have a total of 10 years work experience at the University; 5 years as a Lecturer and 5 years as a Senior Lecturer after obtaining my PhD.

1/ Will my 5 years experience be treated as a senior or specialist level work experience?
2/ Will I be able to get 50 points for my expeience?

As I need to score marks in this area, I would like to have your comments soon to enable me to decide applying for HSMP.

Hi Daisy,

I am not sure if I (or others) will be able to confirm whether your role as Lecturer can be regarded as a senior level experience. Only someone with similar background and who has been successful in HSMP can say for sure.

The caseworker guidelines do mention the following regarding senior level work experience, and I quote -

Senior level
Examples of this level would be;
• a role at board level in a company
• a department head
• a leader of a project management team.
Some examples of the sort of questions to think about the responsibilities that an applicant claim are;
(i) Do they have any budget/financial control/autonomy?
(ii) Is the applicant responsible for a large number of staff/departments/offices?
(iii) Is the applicant making key decisions for the company/project team without needing to obtain clearance from a superior?
(iv) Is the applicant high in the company hierarchy?
If the evidence clearly demonstrates that the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes’ then it indicates the duties are senior level.
For those working in academic fields it may be that they have run a
department, reached the status of professor, or headed a research team.
Please note; not every job is the same. These examples are just a guide to give the caseworker an idea of what they should be looking for. The
caseworker needs to be satisfied that the duties and responsibilities are
senior enough before the points can be awarded.

We will usually consider those that run their own business and employ a
number of staff as demonstrating senior level work experience. There is no exact number of staff required but the evidence should indicate that the applicant is undertaking senior level duties such as the ones above.
However, you still need to be satisfied that sufficient evidence has been
provided to establish what level of work they are undertaking.
