HMRC tax return printout - original required?

HMRC tax return printout - original required?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can help with my quick question. My husband (EEA national) and I are applying for EEA3 and EEA4 respectively.

He was self employed for 10months between 2010-2011 and just completed tax return online. He downloaded a copy of tax return form from HMRC website and printed it out.

But could anyone tell me if this counts as original or do we need anything else from HMRC? The downloaded copy is 14 pages in PDF format and every bit official.

It was good enough in 2009 when I applied for my PR, I did send it to them to cover at least one year.

There is first of all no need to send in a complete tax return with any EEA application. Paying income tax is of course a convincing way of proving that you were exercising treaty rights (either as an employee or as self-employed), but there is certainly no need to disclose all details to UKBA. As long as you didn't rely on public funds, there is no minimum income that you need to achieve.

What I have done in the past (and mentioned on this forum various times), was to phone the tax office and ask for a certified printout of my tax calculation for a couple of years, which they provided very quickly and without any problems. Just one page per year, nothing more. And don't bother about the long list of documents listed on the application form: these are all examples of how you can prove your status, and if you can prove it in any other way, that's fine too. So if you have tax summaries as described above, don't send in bank statements, accountant statements or whatever. Keep your application concise.

Boloney, fysicus, thank you both so much for your advice.

We actually got certified printouts from HMRC for different tax years (my husband was self employed twice in 5 years.) Like you said it is kind of a summary of tax calculation for the year, just one page per year. And these printouts are the only evidence of self employment for those 2 years.

It would be ideal if we could get the same printout for 2010-2011, but as he only completed tax return last week I am not sure when it will be available..
