some idiotic realities

Post by ca.funke » Mon Feb 20, 2012 12:27 pm

Just want to show which unwanted/comical outcomes European immigration laws have. Obviously just some random examples, but it´s the idiocy I want to show:
  • A Lebanese citizen living in Norway may travel to all of Schengen on his own. (incl. Switzerland)
    • If same person is married to an EEA citizen, he may additionally travel to the UK+Ireland+Bulgaria+Romania+Cyprus, but only if the spouse accompanies him.
    • If same person lives in the UK, he may only travel if he´s married to an EEA citizen and accompanied, however in this case he may not travel to Switzerland. If married to a Swiss citizen, he´s stuck altogether...
    • Travelling from Norway will not cause any trouble.
    • If he tries to use his right to travel from the UK
      • he will "sometimes" end up having to explain as to why he thinks he has the right to travel
      • and also "sometimes" he will have a harder time to enter the country of which the spouse is a national compared to other EEA countries.
  • A Russian citizen living in Switzerland may travel to all of Schengen on his own.
    • If same person is married to a Swiss (not EEA) citizen, he may additionally travel to the UK, but only if the spouse accompanies him.
    • If same person is married to an EEA (not Swiss) citizen, he may additionally travel to the UK+Ireland+Bulgaria+Romania+Cyprus, but only if the spouse accompanies him.
      • Any UK embassy will tell you that this is not the case, however when arriving to the UK you will usually make it past their checkpoints...
    • If same person lives in the UK, he may not travel to Switzerland even if he´s married to an EEA (not Swiss - that´s different) citizen.
      • But they may travel to Liechtenstein, which is behind Switzerland´s customs checkpoints, from where there are no further checks towards Switzerland. Just 100% not allowed to cross this unmanned border!
I´d love if some politician could point out the sense of this all ;)

As far as I can see these unwanted or comical effects are not a direct result of European regulations, but the misinterpretation and misimplementation by some isolationist countries, in particular the UK and Switzerland
