A person that i know wants to visit the USA but this man has a conviction for assault in the UK and has done time in prison this man holds a British passport would he be allowed to visit the USA ?

That person will not be able to use the US Visa Waiver system to travel to USA regardless of having spent or unpsent convictions.

He or she will have to apply in person from US Consulate in London either for B1 or B2 US Visa, but they will have to obtain POLICE CERTIFICATE FROM ACRO. Convictions will have declared on the form and the POLICE CERTIFICATE from ACRO will have to provided to the US Consulate.

After the application for either B1 or B2 visa is submitted that person will be refused at the interview by the Consular under section 221g for addtional administrative processing and will have to wait atleast 16 weeks before the visa is issued. Within this time the Embassy will make enquiries to confirm the authanticity of the documents.
