Immigrate to Denmark

Post by 1punter » Tue Nov 21, 2006 1:36 am

Hi,

My mother is a Danish citizen but has lived in the US for most of the last 50 years. I am a US citizen and am 47 years old. I am thinking about immigrating to Denmark, and I currently still have relatives, cousins and aunts, that are Danish citizens. Could they sponser me to become a Danish citizen? How difficult would is be for me to become a Danish citizen giving these factors? By the way, i have no job offers from Denmark.

As it appears you were born before 1 January 1961, you don't have any claim to apply for Danish citizenship under the "Princess Rule"

Your relatives cannot sponsor you for Danish citizenship. As to whether you have a chance to immigrate to Denmark, contact the Danish Embassy.

Can you speak Danish?

Bear in mind that the normal waiting time for Danish citizenship is long (9 years, although there may be concessions for those of Danish heritage). Normally, under current law, you would be obliged to sign away your US citizenship at the American Embassy (if you wanted to become a Danish citizen by naturalisation) and if you did that, you could not then subsequently reclaim US citizenship if you changed your mind. As a former US citizen you would be ineligible for a US passport and would be treated like any other "alien" in the United States.

Thank you JAJ for your reply. It sounds like it would entail more difficulties than it is worth, no offense intended to the Danes.
