Student Visa:Sponsorship legal obligation

Hi
One of my friend lives in India and he has got admission in one of UK university.
He has to apply for Visa and he ask me to send some of my documents like bank statement,payslip etc so that he can show me as sponsor.
I know I don't have have to support him for his education as he have enough money.

My question is if he show me as sponsor then what will be the legal obligation on me.
If I sponsor him is it required that I have to pay him any money each month or year?

Well, unless you swear that in front of a solicitor...

On the other hand, the BHC can check that you are a real sponsor...
