Does every student need to have a sponsor? If I have enough money do I need to look for one?

One more question. A friend of mine is here for almost 8 years and was talking to one lawyer who told her that status as an student DOESN'T count for a long residence? Is that true and has anything being changed then?

You don't need a sponsor at all so long as you can afford it yourself. You can't rely on using income earned whilst working the allowed 20hrs a week as a student here.

I thought 10 years legal stay includes time on a student visa.

I am sorry to say, that lawyer was definately wrong.

A student DOES qualify for 10 year long residence rule provided he legally and lawfully remained in the UK for a continious period of 10 years with SINGLE breals not exceeding 6 months in ONE go.

P.S. That refers to even the case when all, say, 10 visas (1 visa per year) was obtained overseas (I had that sort of client once).

My cousin has been here for the past 10years doing her A levels, 1st Degree, Masters. She's been on a student's visa for more than 6 years and recently got her ILR. So students visa does count towards your accumulated years of stay in the UK.

student visa time DOES Not count towards the 5 year ILR. but it does count toward 10 years ILR>
