Passport expiration

How far in the future does passport have to be valid for H1B status change? (Not H1B stamp, just status change)

Any ideas on this?

I asked an immigration lawyer and he said it does not have to be valid, but it may delay the process and therefore should be valid at all times.

Whereas I read on some websites that your passport has to be valid 6 months into the future at all times while you're in the USA..

Any ideas?
