Hello,

Technically, you are in relationship akin to marriage...My though is that you just submit FLR(M) application.

Also, technically you cannot apply for ILR as unmarried partner having married your partner = being a spouse rather then an unmarried partner at the time of your ILR application. A change from an unmarried partner to a spouse is classified by the Home Office as a change of circumstances, which must be advised/applied for to the Home Office.

The problem is that in case of unmarried partners you DO get your ILR after 2 years of your relationship, same as with married partners, BUT you will have to live in the UK for 3 MORE years in order to qualify for naturalization as a UK citizen.

The Home Office may not be willing to add up your time as unmarried partner and then as a spouse towards your ILR, too.

I would suggest you wait until you get your ILR in your current status, if you really need it....

It's because there is a 5 year residence period for naturalisation unless you are legally married to a British citizen.

HOWEVER, once you get married (assuming your partner is a British citizen), the residence requirement immediately drops to 3 years. No minimum period of marriage. But you still must have ILR.

And I don't know where you get the figures above from. For unmarried partners it's usually 2 years limited leave, then 3 years on ILR to make up the 5 years.

It's really very simple:

1. If you are not legally married to a British citizen:
- 5 years legal residence including at least 1 year with ILR

2. If you are legally married to a British citizen on the date you apply for naturalisation
- 3 years legal residence with no minimum time to have ILR (provided you have it!)
