yugoslavia/scottish deccent

First time poster here so hopefully I am not breaking any rules.

I was wondering if anyone could fill me in about on ancestry passprts.
I have grandparents from both Yugoslavia & Scottland. Would that give me a chance at a passport for either of those countries or what Yugoslavia has become.My parents were both born here.My grandfather came over from scottland to austraila when he was little.No one can fill me in if he gave up his rights or he lost them due to the age factor. I know he married here.

My other grandfather came over to australia in 1950. I found out via the net that he & my grandmother (italien) applied for naturalistion but dont know if it was granted or when it was granted.

I allready found out that I cant get an italien passport because my nan was born before 1948 - women wernt allowed to pass down citazenship before that.


If anyone could help me out that would be greatly appricated.

I am Australian my grandad came from slovenia but grew up in Italy. Trieste near where his wife is from.

First things first. As an Australian citizen you can get a UK Ancestry Visa based on your Scottish grandparent. This allows you to move to the UK to work (but not study, for example). After 5 years you can get Indefinite Leave to Remain and after one further year, become a naturalised British citizen.

You will need some documentation, especially your grandfather's Scottish birth certificate (or a new copy from the registrar).

Regarding Slovenian citizenship, you could start by reading this page:

and then maybe writing to the Slovenian Embassy in Australia to see what claim (if any) you have to Slovenian citizenship.

If you got a Slovenian passport you could use this to move to the UK. You would have work rights but would need to register on the Workers Registration Scheme (not usually a problem). Pathway to permanent residence and British citizenship is much the same as on an Ancestry Visa - 5 years to permanent residence, plus 1 extra year for naturalisation.

If you do come to the UK on an Ancestry Visa and later on get a Slovenian passport, stick with your Ancestry Visa and don't use the Slovenian passport in Britain - as otherwise you would risk delaying permanent residence and British citizenship.

And you should also check if Slovenian citizenship carries obligations, such as military service.

As a "British subject" (using the definition of the time), if your grandfather was "ordinarily resident" in Australia from 26 January 1944 to 26 January 1949 he automatically became an Australian citizen on that date (26.01.49) when Australian citizenship was introduced.

He would also have acquired UK citizenship in 1949 based on his Scottish birthplace. Before the late 1940s there was a common British nationality that covered the UK, its colonies and Commonwealth nations.

I think you've misunderstood the position - it's not when your grandmother was born that matters, it's when your mother was born.

However there is another problem here in that before 1992, Italian citizenship was automatically lost by naturalisation in another country.

So if your mother became Australian before you were born, then you most likely cannot get Italian citizenship. However, if she became Australian after you were born, then you are probably an Italian citizen.

Wow! Thanks heaps for all that info. I will get reading into it.

I found out just now that my grandad from Scotland came over in the 1920s. when he was 7/8 with his family. So he would of had both an aussie & UK citazen ship then.

I found some of my grandfather's family yugoslavain side of things on that link you posted. It said they had Declaration of Intention to Apply for Naturalisation - I will have to see if I can find out if they did or not. I know they still get the italien pension & stuff somehow. I dont think that would make a difference tho.

My scottish side I can see my grandfathers uncle on that list but not him yet. Maybe it just hasnt been opened up yet.
