Need advice on application details - NARIC, plus Points

Hello out there.

I am currently working on my HSMP application and I have a few questions for those of you that have been successful at this process.

1. Do I need a NARIC evaluation of my degree no matter what - it is from a well-known University in the US. I have seen that some posters have had this done and others not?

2. Is more points necessarily better? I should score 85 on degree, income and age. However, I did live in the UK within the last five years (and received one of my Masters there). The UK degree is not sufficient proof of my living in the UK, and I do not have my original Home Office student visa approval letter, or my University acceptance letter, so I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle of getting my passport notarized, to add 5 extra points, when I should already score above the requirement?

not been approved but the answers to questions are:

is your well known uni on the NARIC database? bit risky assuming it is and that it equates to UK degree.

more points = better only should you fail in one area but the other areas you passed in still get you 75 points.

shockboy, thanks for the reply. I don't know if you are intentionally being vague, but how am I supposed to know whether my Uni is in the NARIC database - by paying them money?

I have a higher degree from the UK, so I don't need my US masters approved by NARIC, just my undergrad degree to prove that I have English prof.

hehe, im not trying - i dont work for NARIC or anything.

many people have this issue...is their degree on NARIC database or not? I just paid and forgot about it

you can try ringing them - but i'm not sure they will tell you over phone. best bet is to:

a) state your university/qual on forum and see if anyone else has the same

b) find an organisation with subscription to NARIC database, who can look it up for you. Maybe talk to someone at your US uni who knows about international equivalency???

c) bite the bullet and pay

also, if u do pay and want to get US higher + bachelors degree NARIC certified - they will do both for the one fee. Just talk to them nicely on phone

Not Mandatory. Get eng letter from univ.

Pam - what do you mean Eng letter from the University? In regards to the fact that the BA was taught in English?

How do they know it ws taught in English? U need letter..format is given in guidance notes

Yes, I understand that I need a letter that says the BA was taught in English. I have called the University and they have agreed to write one for me. What I was asking is whether I also needed NARIC documentation that the BA is equivalent to a BA in the UK.

But, it's the only BA I have, so if NARIC doesn't think it's equivalent in their "database", then I don't see what good paying them to tell me it's not equivalent will do.

If NARIC doesn't recognize that a 4-year degree at the University of Texas is the same as a UK Bachelors, then there's nothing I can do to prove that I have English proficiency as it sounds like from the rest of the posts I have read (that you can only take the exam if you are *not* proficient)

hi dixie, you are right on spot.

the only way to find out whether or not yours is equivalent is to write to Naric. if you think that would be a waste of money, then IELTS is the only option ( which is again waste of more money) if your degree was Naric equvialent and assuming that you are getting the required letter.

So, its all in your hands now.
