Salary Equivalent

Post by rk79 » Sat Jan 06, 2007 2:09 am

Hello!

I have been offered a position in London. I currently work in New Delhi. My question - what would be the UK equivalent of INR 10 Lacs? In other words, what salary should one quote if he/she is drawing a gross salary of Rs. 10,00,000-11,00,000 in New Delhi.

This is my first post and I hope that I have given sufficeient details to get an answer.

Thanks!

There are many posts on this forum which detail the cost of living in London.

Now compare that with your current cost of living in India and the savings you make currently and then work backwards to arrive at an acceptable salary in London.

Then decide if it's worth leaving you current job.

Hope I am making sense...

Thank you Olisun,

It does answer my question to some extent but I still have some doubts. What I want to find out is the equivalent of purchasing power of Rs. 10,00,000-11,00,000 in New Delhi to an amount in London!

I was suggested a few "cost of living calculators" but they did not help at all...it would really help me if you guys can quote a figure...

Thanks again!

it all depends on personal circumstances.

for 12 lakh CTC INR you will get max of 65-70k pm not more than that.

for a family with one kid expenses would be around 30-35k or so per month considering the standard of living in NCR region.
again as said varies on case to case basis.

so assume your savings after home loan, insurances, car etc would be around 35k pm which is roughly 450 GBP ( 80 rs as conversion rate ).

Expenses per month for a family in London / surroundings will be min. 1600 GBP pm ( it might even go higher)

Now if you wanna save roughly above figure you need to earn atleast 40k GBP PA.

These are rough figures for your understanding.

Very easy thumb rule

Multiply your Indian Rs earning by 4.
Convert it to pounds.
That should be your yearly income in UK.

So, for 10 lakh pa in India = £50K in UK (£1 = Rs 80)

But this is a very rough calculation.

One more thing which you should consider is Standard of Living. You may get good salary in India but Standard of Living is far away in the UK from India.

If I get 12 Lakhs/ Annum in India and get an offer from UK for GBP 30-35k/ Annum, then I'll select UK offer... Rest is up to you :)

One more thing which should be mentioned here that INR 12 LPA will come as 65-70k/ Month (After Tax and there are so many sections in Salary which you will actually not get as cash) in hand which is around GBP 850 only. So now think again :)

rk79,

Having said that UK is the best etc for savings aspect, still you need to consider lots of other parameters like trips to India, costs involved etc.
Not sure if you have took any decision by now... There are lots of pros and cons, staying in UK also......PM me if you want to discuss more...
Last but not the least, dont get deceived by UK job sites ( rather consultants ) who keep a heavy tag of some 60-75k £ for your skillset... many a times its all bogus.
