Channel 4 is again being inundated with complaints over dearly beloved comments on a reality television show, though this time it’s not Big Brother but Shipwrecked that is the centre of the controversy.
According to the BBC more than 430 people have now complained to media watchdog Ofcom over a Shipwrecked contestant’s comments.
18 year-old Lucy Buchanan said black people were “really bad”, and called lesbians “sinister”.
She also said: “Britain is a complete mess. I just don’t appreciate people coming into our country and taking over our culture. I’m for the British Empire and things. I’m for slavery, but that’s never going to come back.”
Lucy’s place at University is now reportedly threatened by the storm over her comments, though her parents have defended her, calling her a “naïve teenager”.
So far Channel 4 has resisted calls for both Big Brother and Shipwrecked to be taken off the air.
