Valid UK FLR Visa but no way of obtaining new passport

Hi

My wife currently has a valid FLR visa until Oct 08 and we are living in the UK. Her passport is about to expire end of March, and she has asked her embassy for a new one. They have said there is no materials to make them and if there was, there is a large waiting list. How does this affect her immigration status, as she will be stuck in the UK, without a valid passport. Is it possible to try and apply to her embassy in a different country before her passport runs out.

If your wife can get proof from her country's embassy that they are unable to issue her with a passport, then she might be able to apply for a Home Office travel document.

Just a guess, but is your wife from Zimbabwe? I ask only because it has been widely reported that the Zimbabwean government no longer has the materials and equipment to produce identity documents or passports and has a backlog of over 300 000 applications. No doubt this situation will only get worse until Robert Mugabe is overthrown.
