Should you join her? Isn't that down to you and her to discuss? Anyway, you should first look through the BIA website (previously known as IND) and read about the ancestry visa, and about spouses. That is always the best place to start off; they have everything you need to know there (visa, length of stay, employment, etc). Then try ukvisas for more info if you want.

I guess, if you are having problems with your application(s), then this board can be more valuable, but in terms of the actual process, it's better to start with the boss (BIA). But has she even submitted the application?

hi,

Sorry, I meant "could", not should.

From what I have read, I could join her on the Ancestary Dependency visa, just cannot find any information on this specific visa. Most web sites have info on the Ancestral visa and simple mention the depentant visa is availible for spouses.

The BIA web page states that you can come to the uk on an Ancestral visa as long as "you can support and accommodate yourself and any dependants adequately without help from public funds."

What employment would I as the dependant be able acquire?

We have not applied as yet, rather are looking at what visa option suits us best. With all the chaos surrounding the HSMP visa at the moment its better to look at some other more stable alternatives.

It depends on what your qualifications are and what work you are willing to do. There is no restrictions on the job that can be taken up by a dependant if you are eligible for the post.

Ok, thanks.

I was worried that i might lost the flexability offered by the HSMP visa and possibly only limited or casual employment.

In conclusion, would you reccomend applying for the Ancestral visa above HSMP, in terms of acquiring employment and buracratic limitations ?

Yes you have no problems in terms of getting a dependants visa off your wifes Ancestral visa.

But think about the add on costs, after 5years £1000. for a ILR and after 6years nationality application £560.This is over and above your initial application costs in SA.(not sure what it is currently)

Personally had I known what I now know, after 4 and a half years I would never left SA despite crime, afirmitive action ect.
Salaries in the UK are not that great and the quality of life is awfull , flats/houses are cramped.
So unless you and your wife together earn more than £80k pa, dont move.
Sorry if this is negtive but the UK is not fun and I'm just telling you how many SA see things.

I personally would chose to be a dependant on the Ancestral visa than be on HSMP as it is more flexible in terms of employment.

"Should I join her, what visa would I need to apply for and what employment could I get?" is perfectly correct English and makes good sense in the context - the word "should" in this case is a way of expressing the subjunctive mood (as distinct from its - perhaps - more common usage to mean "ought to"). So, it means something like, "If I (should) choose to join her...".

Yours pedantically...

Although with more risks if the relationship were to end before ILR is granted.
