AM I BRITISH?

Post by CHIDI » Thu May 17, 2007 11:31 am

I AM A BIT CONFUSE ABOUT MY STATUS, MY FATHER IS BRITISH AND MY MOTHER IS ALSO BRITISH. DOSE THIS MEAN THAT I AM ALSO BRITISH EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T BORN IN BRITAIN?

Easy on the capslock! When and where were you born? Where are you and what nationality do you hold now?

When were you born?
Where were your parents born? If born outside the UK, how did they get their British nationality?
Were your parents married?

I think. No, you are not British or entitled to British nationality. Why? You parents naturalised as British, and were not born British, which means they cannot pass on their nationality to you (by descent). Now, if you had moved with your parents before your 18th birthday, you could well have naturalised along with your parents (as their dependent), but since you are now over 18 (and I'm thinking in your mid-20s?), you cannot claim citizenship from them at all.

In sum, even though your parents are British, this does not make you, because they naturalised and so cannot pass on citizenship to you.

Anyone care to jump in?

sakura, I totally agree with your analysis.

CHIDI, regretfully you are not British. Your parents' British status is of no assistance to you in this matter.
