"xx" written on exit stamp??

Post by Noz03 » Thu Aug 29, 2013 11:06 am

What does it mean if a Romanian immigration officer writes 2 small x in pen on an exit stamp when we are leaving a country? It is only on my wifes passport but am worried it could cause her problems applying for visas in other countries in the future.

Well my wife has to get a schengen visa to visit europe still. It's free and easy but she still needs it. But what does the little xx mean? I am guessing it is just a romanian note to their own immigration not to let her back in again for transit as she used transit twice, but I'm worried it could mean something like she was deported or something that could affect other countries visa applications.

That is only true if the non EU person has a Residence Card

Not sure what the xx means. Was there any particular discussion as you were leaving which might give a hint? If you are curious, you should consider calling up the Romanian border agency and asking. http://www.politiadefrontiera.ro/

Well my wife has a schengen visa, and with a schengen visa she is only allowed a transit visa for Romania, which states you must only stay for 5 days and not leave from the same point of entry. We actually went to Romania twice, both times in and out from Bulgaria although we kept to the rules, both visits were much less than 5 days and we never left from the same point. The immigration officer didn't speak any English but he seemed upset about our travel plans. Only thing I could understand from him was "transit, no" "Romania, finish".

What citizenship do you have? You were travelling together? Did you show your marriage certificate?

I am British and my wife is Turkish. I never showed it because they never asked for it, and she already had the visa before leaving so I figured it wasnt needed as long as we followed their 5 day rule and left from a different crossing.

As for travelling without visa, it might work at airports but I definitely wouldnt recommend it at land crossings, first of all I almost never see a single official there that can speak a word of English so how could you even explain to them that you are family? I also asked when leaving the EU on the boarder of Turkey/Bulgaria if my wife could have entered with just our international marriage book and they said no, maybe if I'd pushed... but still, it would have been very problematic I'm sure. I guess the EU just don't enforce their laws so of course the immigration don't respect them either.

It likely takes a while to get it resolved. If you plan to go again, I would strongly suggest you start by making a complaint today. Get it resolved formally. It is also part of the education process for the border guards about the EU law which now applies on their borders.
