Non-visa family member accompanying on first trip

I have family in SA who have qualified for and received a Tier 2 visa.

One of the sons is 20 years old and therefore is not a dependent. He will be accompanying the family on the initial trip to the UK so he can decide whether he wants to apply to a university here and for a student visa.

Obviously he will have a tourist visa but I am concerned that if a family of 4 turn up at the border, three of them on Tier 2 and one on a tourist visa then they may think something funny is going on.

Is there likely to be a problem with this at all? Or as long as he has his return ticket he will be ok?

Appreciate any opinions you can provide.

If he is granted the visa before he travels he will not have any issues on arrival as any problems would have been resolved beforehand. So, getting a visit visa when his family already have residence visas and are emigrating to the UK without him is the only hurdle he faces. Does he have an independent life and strong social and economic ties to SA?
