migrating from NORWAY to LONDON

Hello folks,
I intend to migrate from Oslo to London with my two teenage kids. We hold a Norwegian passports but before we move there permanently. Now my questions are:

1. Will i have any working restriction in the UK?
2. Do they have good schools there?(I dont mind public schools if they are good)
3. I was thinking of renting a three bedroom house or apartment...but does anyone know how much those cost in London?

We are looking to move there ASAP ,and if kids get a school then i would like them to start after summer when.


Can anyone please help with answers or even website links that can help me in moving to London.

I have edited your post, but merely to insert question numbers. Using that numbering :-

1. You are an EEA National, Norway being part of the EEA. Accordingly you have every right to move to the UK and exercise your Treaty Rights, and those include the ability to live and work in the UK. No visas or Work Permits required.
2. They do have good schools. and they have bad schools as well! When you know where you are moving to ... London being a big city .... far bigger than Oslo, for example .... make enquiries about the local schools. How old are the children? And how is their English?
3. This will vary considerably. Again London is a big city and some areas are clearly much more expensive than others. Have a look at say www.rightmove.co.uk and search on rental properties in your chosen area of London.

Just to expand on the above, London is about 12 times the size of Oslo.

We have spent a few days on holiday in Oslo. Lovely city ... but so expensive compared to the UK .... so I expect you to find the UK comparatively inexpensive.

I also suggest finding out about public transport at www.tfl.gov.uk, because you might find driving around a little costly (i.e. congestion charge). Look at the different parts of London (via postcodes, N, NW, SE, SW, E, EC, WC), to find out about the local areas, prices, schools. Maybe visit www.dfes.gov.uk for information on the education system.

How old are the kids? Education is.....sometimes good, sometimes bad over here, so you should think long and hard about whether they studying GCSEs or A Levels are what you/they will be happy with. If you don't mind paying, read about public schools here: http://www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk/

Thanks guys for your reply, I mean its the first day and i got a response so surely this must a be a good website and i wish there were ways i could pay. I will look around if you have those Google ads at least might be a way of saying thank you. And to SAKURA &JOHN i would like to thank you for those links that you gave me and i looks forward into going through those websites.

Basically, the kids ages are 13 and 17 and they have a very good commanding English so i am definetly sure they will adjust real quick with that. Furthermore, i am looking into enrolling them to schools not far from the area that we will live and its a bit confusing as i am told they have Grammar school and Comprehensive schools and i am not sure about the difference yet.

Personally, i am not yet set with job wise but i hope i will find some once i am in London even though i am aware that the job market is saturated but i have saved enough so we can manage for at least 6 months or so.

Yes Norway is more expensive than in London but we were looking to rent an apartment but i have been told that renting apartment for 6 months will cost a fortune so i am looking to rent a normal house for that period even though i am not sure if many land lords will accept that.

To add to what John has posted.

- under current law, you will obtain Permanent Resident status after living/working/studying in the UK for 5 years
- One year after obtaining Permanent Residence, you can apply for naturalisation as a British citizen
- However under current Norwegian law, you would lose Norwegian citizenship by becoming British. You should keep in touch with developments in Norway in case they change the law there (like Sweden, Finland and Iceland have done recently).
