Indian Tourist Visa

Asking this on behalf of a friend with a European Passport-

Is it correct to assume that on an Indian tourist visa, a person can stay in India for 90 days at one time and then leave the country for a day and return to India the next day if the person has a 6 months multiple entry visa?

Also, is it correct that tourists don't have to register with the police if the stay is less than 6 month (180 days)?

Also, is it absolutely necessary to show the Indian Embassy confirmed flight tickets for an Indian Visa? Does an itinerary showing the dates of your intentions for flying and returning suffice?

Would be grateful to hear from anyone who has done so..

Does anyone know from experience how long it takes to process an Indian tourist visa from Spain through the post (not the UK)? I am concerned because of the Christmas and holiday period. The website states 10 working days but is it usually processed quicker? Any one with experience, please share... Thanks.
