Self employed UK/US citizens looking to move to DE/NL?

Post by sprout » Thu Dec 26, 2013 6:22 pm

I've done research around this topic and I think this is possible, but I would be grateful for a sanity check!

I'm a UK citizen married to a US citizen. We're currently living in the UK, looking to settle in Germany OR the Netherlands when my wifes current UK visa expires. I am self-employed and my wife is a journalist who works from home. I'd like to continue to be self employed if possible.

1. Can we move to Germany/Netherlands whilst I continue to be self employed and my wife continues to work remotely/from home?
2. If yes, do I just exercise my EEA treat rights inside Germany/Netherlands?
3. Will my wife need a visa ahead of the trip? She won't have a valid UK visa when we move.

Any and all input is appreciated. Thank you![/list]

It would be helpful to readers if you were to clarify your intentions. Is this a simple question about working in another EU state....only? Otherwise, if you intend to use the Singh route for your partner's UK immigration, it would be better to say so from the outset, so that you can can get the correct and relevant comment. What is the scenario?

No problem, sorry for the confusion.

We're just looking to move from the UK to Germany or the Netherlands, we do not need/intend to use the Singh Route.

You have register as a self-employed entity with the local tax authority in Germany of Nederlands, and that is all that matters. But you don't have to do this before your travel. This is only necessary when you are actually established in a SE capacity in that country. You wife will not need a visa before she travels if she travels with you.

Thanks for the information, Lucapooka - that lines up with what I have found online. Time to look more closely at the SE laws now!
