Regaining Dutch Nationality

Post by aloye » Tue Jan 07, 2014 6:59 am

Hello Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has expertise in Dutch Nationality laws. Here's a little background on myself-- I was born to a Dutch National in Canada in 1988. Since my mother lost her Dutch Nationality in 1995 (due to being born in Canada and subsequently living outside the Netherlands for a continuous period of 10 years after reaching the age of majority), I also lost mine. BUT, between 1995 and 2005 former Dutch Nationals had the option to regain their Dutch Nationality. Since I was a minor at that time, what are the chances that I could use that option now? They can't honestly have expected minors to have applied for themselves, and that's pretty discriminatory IMO. Are there any loopholes around this??

Cheers

I think you had until April 1, 2013 to apply to regain the nationality. Unfortunately, that time has expired. See here (click).

However, would it not be the case that if you were to live in the Netherlands for one year, as an ex-Dutch national you could apply to naturalise as an option (click)? Contact the department (click) and dig further.

Hi,
I am in a very similar situation you, except I was born to a Dutch father in South Africa in 1986. I have been tearing my hair out trying to get my citizenship back. From the information that I have obtained so far, I must live in the Netherlands for one year with a permanent residence permit. Getting a permanent residence permit can be very difficult.
The Dutch Immigration are very strict about this matter and completely refuse to even discuss giving me my citizenship back.
Please let me know if you have found any information that may be of use. I will do the same.
All the best.
