us perm resident getting stamp 4

Post by tim131 » Wed Feb 12, 2014 1:55 pm

Hi all.

I'm and Irish citizen my Wife is non eu national, she is and has been a permanent resident of the USA since she was young. She is going to apply for naturalization soon as well.

However I was thinking of getting her the stamp 4 as its easier to get to Ireland with it

Wwould anyone know if this would prevent her from retaining her permanent residence in the US. All her family is there and she will return in a couple of months to naturalisee and we will long distance it.

Can anyone advise whether she'd be ok getting the stamp 4 and not refused back into the states?

Thanks a lot

I don't see any reason why she will loose her US PR card by having stamp 4. Go for it and good luck

Thanks a million for the reply mate!!

Just wanted to get someone elses opinion on it to be sure - as the last thing I'd want is her being probed by the US customs officer about her being an Irish resident and abandoning her US residence haha :)

Do you youself know, wheter its a card or a stamp or both? do you have to get a stamp or can you just get the stamp?

Cheers

Tim

She will get three things:

GNIB card (same as a bank card)
A stamp on her passport and
and a re-entry visa on her passport (Sticker)

You;re a super star

so tell us more about this re-entry visa if you would? she gets this as standard from the local immigration garda when we go visit him with our marriage cert? or does she have to apply for this as well?

Does she get given her card and stamp on the same day as the appointment - we'd be going to the bray gardai station!

Cheers

If you are not living in Dublin. you both will visit your local immigration officer she will get the GNIB card and passport will be stamped. Once she is registered, than both of you will visit INIS in Dublin for the re-entry visa if you require it on the same day. otherwise you can send your passport by post and in few days it will be sent back to you.

More info on INIS website on re-entry: http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/Re-entry%20visas

and you can get more info about the Spouse of an Irish National visa on this link: http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/WP07000024

Good Luck

Ah right so she'll have to apply for that re-entry visa every time she wants to leave? Ah sure things are a bit up in the air as to when she will leave and come back and how many times - seems like she is just as well coming in and getting the 3 month visa at the airport every time, cos sending her passport away could be a hassle. Shame I thought once you got the stamp4 card, that and your passport would be all you need to get back in the country.

Sure we'll just wait until she gets her citizeship in the US and decides to stay here permanently as its just a hassle otherwise.

Thanks a million though for your help

It is best to wait until she gets her US citizenship.

Another point is that if she gives birth outside US after she becomes a US citizen she should get the US passport for the child immediately. Citizenship laws can change and this has caused problems for people I know who were entitled to a particular citizenship and lost it because they never got the passport when it was possible for them to do so. Therefore the wise choice is to get all available passports for a baby at birth, and then they have proof of exercising each citizenship.
