It took just under 6 months for the entire process!
This forum keeps you somewhat sane as you see other people in a similar boat as you. The key is to be patient and not get worried about it too much when you see some people getting it quicker than you. I tried not to think about it at all and carried on with my normal life... as opposed to checking this site or the Gov's application status page, every other day.

But on the next day we received another letter stating that the application WILL NOT be decided withing the 6 months due to "exceptionally complex" circumstances. Hopefully this is just an automated letter sent due to my application being close to the 6th month. But only HomeOffice can tell you that your case is not decided after telling you earlier that it was decided
