I don´t know about 1964 as this was way before Schengen but today, if you are a German citizen, you are not illegally in the UK, you have right of abode as an EEA citizen.

What did the German Embassy say when you applied for the passport? If you were born a German citizen, you didn´t lose your nationality by not living in Germany, so I am quite sure it will all be just fine.

After such a long time in the UK you could most probably also apply for British citizenship. As the UK is in the EU, you would also not lose your German nationality, it´s one of the few cases where dual citizenship is allowed by German law. (But before you rush off and apply, better check with the German Embassy whether you need to file a 'Beibehaltungsantrag' anyhow, as a formality or some such thing.)

I am also a bit curious - at the age of 53, have you never had need of some sort of official ID so far?

I wish you all the best and hope you´ll soon have your passport in hand.
