Do they check BRP's on round trip cruises?

Post by melsonthenet » Wed May 02, 2012 10:16 pm

Can I travel on a round trip cruise on P&O from Southampton to Norway and back to Southampton without my BRP?

Let me elaborate?

I got the phone call yesterday that I have been granted ILR on SET M as a spouse from a premium service application. Great news but my BRP will not arrive on time as I have a round trip cruise booked from Southampton to Norway. It is an urgent trip as I am a carer going with a disabled man to assist him as he is unable to go by himself.
So my main question is will they let me leave on a cruise ship and let me back in. I will be able to bring all the information I possibly can proving I have ILR. The thing is once I'm on the ship my passport will be in the hands of the cruise company. Do they even check BRP's yet on cruise liners.

Any advice would be much appreciated

If it is, as you state, just a round trip with no passengers joining at ports outside the UK, the immigration check is likely to be on the manifest only. Your Indefinite Leave status should be on the database which is accessible by IOs at the port, so if you just carry your passport and the letter confirming your ILR, I doubt you should have a problem even if you are presented to an IO.

There is a snippet in IDIs relating to such cruises:-
There are occasions when passengers arrive in the United Kingdom by air or sea then join a cruise ship, subsequently to return to the United Kingdom. On their return, such "fly/cruise" and "cruise/cruise" passengers need not be required to present passports or other documents, but it will suffice to give bulk leave to enter by endorsement of a passenger list as outlined in paragraph 3.9 below.
Obviously by inference it also covers people who are settled in the UK.

There may be an IO in attendance soon after the ship arrives in Southampton, mainly to clear any crew who are leaving. The ship keeps all the crew's passports and discharge books, in my experience they don't hold the passengers' passports.

Thanks My Rusty for your reply,

I'm not sure if there are other passengers getting on the ship in Norway, I'm assuming there's a possibility.

But regardless will have evidence of my ILR status so thanks for making me feel better about the risk on going. Mush appreciated
