I have a Tier 1, question about working in Switzerland.....

Post by savitar » Tue May 08, 2012 1:54 pm

Hello all,

Again, thanks for all the help I have received off this forum.

Now for a very different style question to those of the "how / when / where can I apply questions".

I have a tier 1 visa (been in the UK for over 3 years) and am employed in the UK. One of the customers for my company is in Switzerland. I will need to go there for meetings on a regular basis, say 2-3 days every 2-3 weeks.

Are there any issues with this that anyone can see (I.e. I assume I don't need a visa to work in Switzerland as I am not being employed there)? I will still be employed in the UK to a UK company, I will be living in the UK but its just these meetings I will need to attend.

Thanks for any thoughts / advice.

Whether or not you require a Swiss visa will depend on your nationality & the passport you hold. As far as I'm aware it has nothing to do with your Tier 1 General visa or immigration status in the UK.

You will need to find out from the Swiss Consulate (you can search for this online) what the visa requirements are for your nationality.

Tier 1 visa has no restriction on your work. And its a multi entry visa. I don't see any issues with you going to Switzerland as many times you want.

Apologies for above comments. I interpreted the question incorrectly. I agree with the above guy. Every country has different rules. Its best to check with Swiss consulate whether business trips are fine without any work permit for their country.

Thanks.

I should have mentioned I have an Australian passport.

I am not worried about getting back into the UK, its my status in Switzerland that I have the question about, any thoughts (apart from contacting the swiss consulate of course)?

You should be able to find out the required information using the following...

The only problem I see is that you may require to give an account during your ILR application of your stay abroad if it goes beyond a total of 6 months in the 5 years period
Check Annex B point 2
One of my colleagues husband had to travel a lot on his Tier 1 visa for company related work. He was asked to give an explanation (when he applied for ILR) for his time above the 6 months allowance for 5 years period.

Just a note to the moderators... As the original question is on EU immigration, this question would best be moved to the Europe immigration forum, if that's possible.
