Holding application

Dear members,

Does anyone know about 'Holding application'?

My employer has applied for a Tier 2 sponsor licence to be able to provide me with a CoS for Tier 2 application. Meanwhile my current VISA is valid for just over a month from now. They have applied a good few weeks ago as far as I know, although I don't know the exact date as they are liaising with an advisory company.

I asked my HR about the progress and she thinks it may be possible to apply for a holding application if it comes close to a touch and go situation.

I don't really know what sort of solution is this? Is it like a temporary fix? Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, S
