Question regarding NHS

Post by mufasa » Tue May 15, 2012 5:33 am

Hi everybody.

I am a dual Chilean/Italian citizen residing in Chile. My girlfriend is going to study in the UK for about one year (she starts on September) and I will go with her. I am not going to ask for financial support from the government since I will bring some savings with me from Chile and intend to work part time jobs in order to have some extra cash.

Now, what I wanna know is... am I entitled to the NHS services? I have read that EEA nationals carrying an EHIC are, but I am not entitled to an EHIC as an Italian citizen because I don't reside in Italy.

On the other hand, I have read that people who "ordinarily reside" in the UK are entitled to free healthcare regardless of their nationality. Will I be considered an "ordinary resident", having in mind that I plan to stay one year in Britain? Will it depend on whether I am working or not? Do you recommend taking a travel health insurance anyway before leaving Chile?

Hope somebody can shed a light on this issue, because I am very confused. Thanks a lot in advance!

As far as I can tell, you will be considered 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for that year during the term of your valid visa and you would be able to access NHS services if required. I don't think it would be counted as public funds and you would be okay. However I am willing to stand corrected by somebody more knowledgeable on this issue.
