Personal profiles:
He is a 26yo German, a bachelor of science in computer science, studied in Germany + Canada, worked as a professional in Germany, USA, Australia, speaks German, English, Spanish, somewhat French and is learning Chinese
She is a 28yo Taiwanese, a master of humanities and social sciences, studied in Taiwan and USA, worked for Taiwanese government in Drug Prevention Center and some casual jobs in Australia, speaks Chinese, Taiwanese, English, is learning German
Our Objective:
My girlfriend looked into immigrating to Germany, but after looking at our visa options and especially job chances for non-German speaking persons, we decided to focus on the UK.
Arguments for UK:
There are several reasons for our decision:
- - She speaks English very well whereas her German still needs improvement, also working experience in an English speaking country will be a plus if we ever wanted to move somewhere else
- I am a bachelor of science in computer science and I would like to study a master program in an English speaking country and I have a job offer for a London based position
- Lack of other options (USA too complicated, Australia too isolated, Taiwan too difficult)
- - Economical situation not perfect
- Difficult to find accommodation (especially during Olympic games)
- Expensive
Visa Options:
(1) Youth Mobility Scheme
- - We tried to apply, but there is a 1000 persons per year limitation that was greatly exceeded this year (at least 6000 people)
- - This means she can go to the UK for 6 months, cannot work during this time but has to find a job from a registered employer (sounds very difficult, especially due to the registered employer limitation)
- - If she manages to find a job / company that requires someone in the UK and sends her there (to do whatever kind of work), she will be allowed to work and could search for a better job while there.
- - Usually for British nationals but possible to apply for if I become a settled person in the UK (self-sufficient + accommodation)
- - Since I am German she can apply but has to prove that our relationship is equal to being married with each other.
- She will be able to go to the UK for 6 months
- Is allowed to work for any employer
- Has to apply for an extension right away because granting the extension might take up to 6 months (according to UK Border Agency).
- I would have to prove that I am self-sufficient and we have an address right away (sounds like a good option, although two problems: (a) our relationship – we have been spending 24 hours with each other for the last two years but lacking evidence, (b) having an address in the UK – afaik finding accommodation is not easy / takes time)
- - Cannot work but could search for a job
- Has to return to Taiwan to apply for any other visa
Timeline of our relationship:
- - July 2008: Met each other in USA, afterwards she went back to Taiwan, I went back to Germany
- August 2008: Intensified contact through e-mail + Skype (longest call: 9 hours straight )
- October 2009: I visited her for two weeks in Taiwan
- February 2010: She visited me for two weeks in Germany
- July 2010: She quit her job and came to Germany on a tourist visa
- October 2010: We went together to Australia for one year on a Work and Holiday visa
- October 2011: We returned to Taiwan and I have been learning Chinese
- December 2011: We returned to Germany to deal with family matters. During this time she finished level A2 German language class
- February 2012 until now: We returned to Taiwan where I picked up with my Chinese studies and worked remote on a software project
Wow, reaching the end of the 2nd page in my word document.
I know that our situation is complicated but I hope there is someone in this forum who (is willing to read two full pages and) understands our situation and can guide us into the right direction. We are desperate for knowing what our next step should be…
Thank you for your help
