Tier 4 work after PhD exam, but before finishing degree

Post by ejfd1983 » Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:40 am

Hi,

I am working full-time on a temporary contract (till October), on the back of my Tier 4 visa. I turned in my doctoral dissertation in December; had my exam on 29 February. I passed, subject to minor corrections.

Can I work full time under these circumstances?

The question is more whether I went back to "term time" when I passed my exam, as I have to do corrections.

My contract is not permanent and I have a statement from my University saying I have no more coursework. This statement was issued in April, after my exam.

So this seems to cover the two requirements for working full time under the PBS Rules: no coursework and no permanent position.

Am I worrying about nothing?

If your course has ended your leave will be curtailed to 60 days. The condition for non-curtailment of leave of where the remainder is less than six months was removed in last bout of policy changes.

Hey,

Thanks for that. That's part of my confusion now: my course has not ended, but my exam is done. I am in limbo. I need to correct the thesis.

Do you think that statement by my uni saying I have no further coursework has me covered, re work?

If you course has not ended you should not be working full time.

So post-exam is not "vacation"? (i.e., non-coursework)

PhD students do not have 'vacations' in the same way that undergrads do, as I would have thought you would know.

You have not completed your course as you have minor corrections, and neither are you on 'vacation' so you should not be working full time.
