Spouse Visa ... return home to apply?

Hello,

I am seeking some advice.

I am an Australian currently in the UK on a Youth Mobility Visa living with my English fiancee.

We are due to marry next month.

We have been told that I will need to return to Australia and apply for a Spouse Visa from there once we are married.

Is it not possible for us to apply in-country (UK) and switch from my Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa to the Spouse Visa and avoid returning home?

I have been living in the UK for 19 months.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
