Post-graduation, pre-visa expiry travel

Post by Aiden » Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:50 pm

Hey all,

my graduation is at the end of June and I am going travelling in July to two different countries, coming back to the UK in-between these two trips.

My student visa expires at the end of September and I heard that if I leave the UK after my graduation, I shall lose my student status.

My country has a visa waiver agreement with the UK so my travels in-and-out of the UK should still be covered by my "General Visitor" status - is this correct? I have sufficient funds in my bank account and a one-way ticket to my home country in early September => will I face any problems while entering the UK? Does anyone have an experience with this?

Thank you for your help!

if you attempt to re-enter the UK using your student visa/leave to remain after completion of your course, you may be refused entry due to change of circumstances under para321(ii)

If you are refused entry then yes as a non-visa national you could instead ask them to admit you as a visitor and show evidence of your ability to finance your stay as well as your intention to return (a return ticket may not be sufficient - you need to show ties to your home country). Obviously if you enter as a visitor you will not be able to work in the UK.

I have done something similiar in the past but this was quite a while ago!

And also my travel was after final exams but before my graduation for which I stated I was returning after a month of travel outside the UK. I has no issues re-entering the UK on my Student visa at the time.

Based on the information provided I suspect you will be alright, as you are a non-visa national. As Greenie has already pointed out, the key will be the IO being satisfied that you do intend to return to your home country at the end of your stay and that you can support yourself while here. It may be worth taking further evidence with you to support your intent to return... I.e. ties to your home country to be on the safe-side.

Great, thanks - I'll make sure that I have a proof of sufficiently strong ties to my home country [on top of a one-way ticket home, bank statement, etc.]. I do not have a job so the loss of my 20 hours/week work entitlement should not affect me - all I want to do is to re-enter the UK and return home for good some weeks later.

Hi Aiden, I was looking for information about this topic and I found your post. I am in a similar situation and I would like to know if you had any problems re-entering the UK. I would appreciate your comments and any advice you could give me.

Thanks in advance
