What happens to BRP on application for naturalisation?

Post by psb » Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:34 pm

Since ILR is no longer a sticker on a passport but an ID card (BRP), is this withdrawn when someone applies for naturalisation or for a British passport?

Do we keep the BRP on application for naturalisation? is it returned to us?

Does anyone know the answer this this?

I know BRPs have only just started to be issued for ILR.

May I ask why you are asking? Is it for your immigration souvenirs collection? or do you want to keep the impression that you still hold ILR as your home country doesn't allow dual nationality?

I would think they return all documents including BRP but as a safe bet, why don't you use NCS?

I do not need the BRP as a souvenir. I need it until I get my British passport. If it is withdrawn when applying for naturalisation, I cannot travel until I receive my British passport.

My country allows dual nationality. I do not use NCS to save money and I don't mind being without passport for two months or so.

Just as the ILR vignette is not stamped "cancelled / invalid" upon naturalisation, the BRP is not "withdrawn".

Just to put the timescales into perspective, applying by post would mean you can be without a passport any time between 2-6 months. Getting a British passport takes about 4 weeks of which about 2 weeks you will be without your current (other) passport as it is required as part of the application.

The chances that you will need to travel between having the naturalisation application approved and getting your British passport are not big (unless of course you don't apply for a passport after becoming BC).
