Getting Romanian Citizenship by marriage

Post by bluesky003 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:31 am

Hi everyone,

I have a question about Romanian Citizenship. I am married Romanian citizen almost for 4 years. I am Turkish citizen and we have been living in Turkey (except some short breaks because of the jobs) for 3 years. I have my EU family member card until end of 2013.
My question is after 5th year of marriage can I apply for Romanian citizenship ? Or did i have to stay in Romania in this 5 year period ?

If it is the second way, I guess I can not get the citizenship...

I would appriciate if you could help me about that.

Best Regards...

I don't know. Why don't you google Romanian naturalisation? A quick search revealed this rather old document.

Thanks for your reply EUsmileWEallsmile.

"Romanian citizenship may be granted on request to a stateless person or a person who is a
foreign national, where the following conditions are fulfilled:
3.1 the applicant was born in Romania and is living there on the date of the request or,
although not born in Romania, the applicant has been living there lawfully for at
least 8 years or is married to a Romanian citizen and has lived with him or her for at
least 5 years since the date of the marriage
; ..."

After I read the law, I had understood that being married to a Romanian citizen and lived with him/her for at least 5 years was enough. But when I googled I have found out that I have to stay for 5 years in Romania to apply for citizenship.

I dont know I guess it is better to ask Romanian consulate.

I suspect your "EU family member card" is probably no longer valid. Usually it expires if you have left the host member state for more than 6 months.

But not to worry. You still have a right of free movement. If you ever do not have a required visa, be sure to carry your marriage certificate when you travel with your spouse. See http://eumovement.wordpress.com/2010/08 ... to-travel/

Thank you for your advice Directive/2004/38/EC. I will check the situation next time when I visit Romania.

I have learned that getting Romanian citizenship through marriage is only possible if a person who married to Romanian citizen lives in Romania for 5 years. And of course must speak Romanian language.

In my case I will not able to apply for citizenship unless living in Romania for 5 years. By the way there are countries like Netherlands, person who is married to Dutch citizen can apply for citizenship even if he/she lives outside of Netherlands with his/her Dutch partner.

I hope these informations will help somebody.
