Extension of Work Permit/ILR

Hi,

I came to UK in Jun 2008, went back to home country and come to UK.I started staying from Aug 2008 with occasional holiday breaks. My current visa(extension) expires in late March 2013. Now, should I apply for another extension in March 2013 or can I directly apply for ILR
