Germany Souvenir Stamps - Issue?

I went to Germany's Berlin Wall in 2009 and got one of the pages in my passport stamped with 3 souvenir stamps (black colour) also known as "Checkpoint Charlie" souvenir stamps.

Just googled it last night and I understand this kind of stamp makes are illegal and makes my travel document (i.e. passport) invalid.

Does that sound right at all?
Do I need to get a new passport?
Are there any rules surrounding this?

I can't see it being a problem for other countries that you intend to enter. This is a matter for your country and its policy with regard to passport use; they may or may not allow passports to be used in this manner.
